Life's Unending Journey: Finding Meaning In The Pit-Stops
When I was young, my family would often take road trips. As a young person I was often anxious to get to where we were going. My brother and I would sit in the backseat. We were equipped with pillows and blankets. We also had games to reduce our boredom, and a cooler full of sandwiches, beverages and other snacks. My brother and I would ask the well-known questions of ‘how much longer?’ and ‘are we there yet?’ Along the way, there would be multiple stops (pit-stops). These stops would allow us to use the restroom, get gas, check the map (smile), stretch our legs, and get additional snacks. While the ultimate goal was to get to the destination and end the journey, the pit-stops were essential.
I have recently realized that I had confused pit-stops with the destination in my adult life. Over the years, I have been driven to complete/achieve things, believing they were in and of themselves the destination. Because I was confused, my achievements would often leave me deflated and striving for the next thing. I now understand that they were not destinations, but rather pit-stops. These stops provided me with the opportunity to collect what I needed to continue the journey to my ultimate destination – Heaven.
I now understand that my work and efforts, on this time side of life, are unending. I am on an unending life journey – until it ends!
